PLASTICS
Plastic is an enormous, expanding elephant in the room. While plastics date back to the 19th century, their use in modern times has skyrocketed, resulting in the prevalence of plastic waste and micro plastics in our environment. We cannot ignore the fact that more and more plastics are being promoted as building materials, from composite trim and siding and decking, to windows, insulation, paint and plumbing. Plastic is often advertised as a durable, maintenance free product, but the reality is that most plastic products have a shorter lifespan than properly treated wood or metal products. In my architecture and building practice, I am committed to avoiding the use of plastic based products to the greatest extent possible., and consistently promote options that are naturally occuring, renewable, compostable, and therefore healthier for the environment and for the people who inhabit their homes.
